Travel Vaccinations
Our NHS travel clinics run once a month. If you require any vaccinations relating to foreign travel, please complete our online travel form.
Prior to attending, it is your responsibility to:
- Ascertain which vaccinations you require by visiting the Travel Health Pro website and choosing the country
- Be fully informed of the recommended travel safe precautions for the country you are visiting
- We strongly advise you to check your requirements at least 3 months before travel, as sometimes a course of up to 3 vaccinations needs to be given over the course of several weeks.
- We cannot offer the service if you are travelling within 6 week or less due to appointment availability. If travelling within 6 weeks or less then you will need to use an alternative private provider.

Prescribing “just in case” medication for travel
We are often asked by patients to prescribe “just in case” medication which is requested in anticipation of the onset of an ailment whilst travelling outside of the UK. Patients are not entitled to medication at NHS expense where there is no existing condition.
Antibiotics
There are three scenarios where antibiotics are recommended:
- Patients with COPD, with predictable exacerbations and have this detailed in their self-management plan
- Patients with recurrent urine infections reliably related to sexual intercourse
- Patients with lymphoedema who are known to develop cellulitis, will be considered on an individual basis
In all other scenarios it is not recommended. This is for several reasons:
- It is not covered by our contract as an NHS service
- It is not recommended in terms of antibiotic stewardship as likely leads to inappropriate targeting of antibiotic use and increased resistance
- It is not recommended for patient safety (it’s likely the antibiotics won’t be the correct ones for the infection you get, or even delay you seeking medical help if unwell)
- It is not recommended by our medicolegal insurance company as we are prescribing a drug without an indication or follow up or clinical assessment
- It leads to increased waste as the antibiotics are likely to expire before use

Other medication or appliances
eg medicines for travel/altitude sickness, diarrhoea
Many of these items can be purchased over the counter from your community pharmacy.
Altitude sickness tablets require a private prescription. This can be obtained from online pharmacies or travel clinics
Compression hosiery
If this is for the sole purpose of preventing a deep vein thrombosis (DVT) whilst travelling, it is not available on an NHS prescription. Below knee, class 1 stockings or ‘flight socks’ are available to purchase.
